A Group of University Students Graduate from the “Youth Leadership for Safe Community” Project
June 22, 2020As part of Tishreen’s ongoing Youth Leadership for a Safe Community Project, a follow-up interactive workshop was held. The workshop was led by Attorney Maysa Irsheid and Attorney Shahrazad Odeh.
Attorney Maysa Irsheid discussed recent research and statistics relating to gun ownership and gun violence in Israel. The workshop provided information on the prevalence of gun ownership in Israel and in the Palestinian community in particular, in comparison to other countries, the extent of gun control, and its relation to organized crime. Attorney Odeh also conducted an outstanding interactive workshop on the topic of masculinity in relation to firearms in Arab society in a post-colonial context. She discussed messages employed in gun violence reduction campaigns and their public reception. She also discussed the relationship between colonialism and gun violence, and the impact of dysfunctional law enforcement on gun violence.
By offering leadership skills and promoting civic engagement, the Youth Leadership for Safe Community Project aims to empower youth leaders to combat violence within Palestinian society.
