September 14, 2020Erada uses cement mixed with rubble from a house that was demolished in January of 2017 in the city of Qalansawe as a means to talk about the demolition of Palestinian houses inside Israel. According to Israeli urban planning and construction permits, there are tens of thousands of homes in Palestinian villages and towns that are facing the threat of demolition. Apart from the disastrous statistics, the political slogans and the claims for respect of human rights, Erada’s work seeks to draw attention to the collective feeling of destitution and lack of ownership on the land and on its potential use purposes. In an area where most of the land is privately owned, Erada asks the question of the residents’ rights to dispose of their property in the context of laws that contrive Palestinian to plan, build and develop outside the law. She then relates to the state of alienation that the owners of the demolished homes face when they receive the Demolition Decision.
When rubble turns witness to tragedy…
Erada collected concrete pieces from the foundation of a house that was demolished, she then milled them by hand in an attempt to build a cement model of discriminative laws with quotes from legal texts.
